DOH Reports Over 17,000 Dengue Cases in First Half of 2024

Manila, Philippines – The Department of Health (DOH) has recorded more than 17,000 dengue cases nationwide from January to June 2024, urging the public to take preventive measures as the rainy season intensifies.

Rising Dengue Cases

According to the DOH, a total of 17,157 dengue cases were reported in the first half of the year, marking a significant concern as mosquito-borne diseases typically surge during wet weather. Health officials emphasize the need for heightened vigilance, particularly in regions with high incidence rates.

Regions Most Affected

The following areas reported the highest number of cases:

  • Central Luzon

  • Calabarzon

  • Western Visayas

Urban and densely populated zones are particularly vulnerable due to stagnant water, which serves as breeding grounds for Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, the primary carriers of the dengue virus.

Symptoms and Prevention

Dengue symptoms include:

  • High fever

  • Severe headache

  • Joint and muscle pain

  • Rash

  • Nausea or vomiting

The DOH advises the "4S" strategy to combat dengue:

  1. Search and destroy mosquito breeding sites.

  2. Self-protection through repellents and proper clothing.

  3. Seek early consultation if symptoms appear.

  4. Support fogging/spraying in hotspot areas.

Government Response

Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa assured the public that the DOH is coordinating with local governments to enhance disease surveillance and conduct clean-up drives. Hospitals are also being prepared to handle potential surges in dengue-related admissions.

Public Call to Action

The DOH urges communities to practice regular clean-up activities, use mosquito nets, and avoid allowing water to stagnate in containers. Early detection and medical intervention remain critical in preventing severe cases or fatalities.
