Great excitement and optimism were felt in the Province of Surigao del Norte following the visit of officials from 2GO Travel, now under the leadership of SM Investments Corporation (SMIC), to the office of Governor Robert Lyndon Barbers for a courtesy call to discuss their plan to launch a direct sea route from Manila to Siargao Island.

2GO presented their initiative as a response to the growing need for a stronger and more efficient connection between Metro Manila and Surigao del Norte, especially with Siargao Island's continued rise as one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. The proposed direct route is expected to provide a more convenient, affordable, and reliable transportation option—not only for tourists but most especially for residents who frequently travel to and from the island. Additionally, cargoes and supplies from Manila to Siargao can be easily transported, further boosting the island's economy and accessibility.

The 2GO Travel representatives also emphasized that their goal is not limited to passenger transport, but also includes building stronger community linkages, promoting sustainable tourism, and creating more economic opportunities across the region. As part of their preparation, they are planning to conduct a survey and technical evaluation of the under-construction international port in Barangay Jubang, Dapa, a project initiated under the Department of Transportation (DOTr) through the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA). The evaluation will assess the condition and capacity of the port as a potential docking site for the proposed Manila–Siargao route.

Governor Robert Lyndon Barbers expressed his gratitude to 2GO Travel for recognizing the potential of the island and the entire province and assured the company of the full support of the provincial government, including coordination and assistance from all concerned provincial offices.

This development marks a strong collaboration between the private sector and local government, aimed at expanding opportunities for the people of Surigao del Norte. It reflects the province’s continued growth—particularly in Siargao—and highlights a shared vision for sustainable progress and inclusive development.
