the filipino's propensity to laugh at his own miseries was best exemplified when that scheduled 6 to 6 brownout turned out to be 16 hour plus darkness in surigao city last night. he said through text that the lights will be back after the hard hitting radio program of Jun Amoncio Clerigo is over the following morning that is today. but what is not funny is when it was finally lifted at 11:17 PM , a fire broke out in borromeo street killing a retired government worker. the cause of the blaze was a lighted candle left under the stairs. the victim never had the chance to save himself as the stairs was already burning.
but that's not the only thing to gripe about. the power interruption revealed the following:
1. that much touted 5 modular gensets that were hurriedly installed through a loan with doe can not operate to lit the entire city. they can only be operable during rotational brownouts. a question may rise - if a rotational brownout in a certain area occurs , will the entire surneco clients pay for it?
2. atty pons casurra was saying that the consumers will suffer double whammy because the electric cooperative signed a contract with nickel asia corporation that it will pay in equal monthly amortizations the php1B investment to put up that power plant in barangay quezon the plant for 15 years even if not harnessed . this as well as those previously mentioned loan with doe to buy those gensets.
3. not only no. 2, surneco also contacted with davao thermal plant, a misamis oriental electric cooperative as stand by power. as a matter of fact, our october electric bill has the additional charge for the power from davao and misamis oriental power plants.
that what you get when politics is involved in electing the members of the board of directors of a completely apolitical power cooperative kuno.
