Siargao Dragons to Represent the Philippines at China‑ASEAN Dragon Boat Festival

A New Wave of Filipino Pride

The Siargao Dragons, a spirited dragon boat team hailing from the Philippines, have been chosen to represent the nation at the upcoming China‑ASEAN Dragon Boat Festival. This announcement marks a major milestone for the island team, bringing them onto a prestigious international stage.

From Local Competitions to International Waters

The team earned their China‑ASEAN spot thanks to an impressive performance at the 2nd International Dragon Boat Festival in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, where they achieved an outstanding overall championship. They dominated several key races:

  • Women’s 500 m – won in 2:28.41

  • Men’s 500 m – topped in 2:08.28

  • Mixed 500 m – claimed first with 2:08.12

  • Mixed 200 m – secured gold in 53.58 seconds

These victories not only showcased their speed but their fierce teamwork and synchronization—critical elements in dragon boat racing.

Growing from Humble Beginnings

Founded in June 2023, the Siargao Dragons quickly built momentum. In their debut at the Dapa International Dragon Boat Festival, they clinched multiple podium finishes, including 3rd place in Small Boat Open and Standard Boat Mixed out of 28 teams . Their early achievements, despite limited experience and infrastructure, highlight their unmistakable talent and determination.

A Platform Beyond Sports

This international qualification means more than medals—it’s about raising Siargao’s profile. Known worldwide for surfing, Siargao now gains recognition as a growing hub for water sports. The team sees this as an opportunity to attract tourism, spur local economic growth, and inspire island youth to reach beyond expectations.

Funding the Journey Ahead

Despite their competitive prowess, the Siargao Dragons require significant financial backing to participate in China. Their fundraising target stands around $14,000, intended to cover:

  • Registration fees for China‑ASEAN Festival

  • Airfare and logistics for 45 paddlers

  • Accommodation, meals, and ground transport

  • Essential medical and training gear

Local supporters have stepped forward, but the team is calling on broader assistance—from Filipino communities and global sports enthusiasts alike.

Supporters can contribute via their official fundraising channel, helping the Siargao Dragons paddle toward international glory and represent the Philippines on a bigger stage. Every donation helps bring their dreams—and the spirit of Siargao—to life.
