Siargao Island, June 2025 – The local government unit (LGU) of General Luna, Siargao, has successfully rolled out its rice subsidy program, “Bodega ng Bayan,” which has now reached 1,134 families across four barangays, reinforcing food security during these times .

How the Program Works

Under the leadership of Mayor Sol Matugas, the initiative provides 5 kilograms of rice to each beneficiary family. Distribution efforts are coordinated through barangay officials, ensuring fair and efficient delivery. Community Impact

Local residents have voiced gratitude for the timely aid. Lucila Plaza, a 60-year-old Tawintawin resident, emphasized the program’s significance:

“We are so thankful to the government for this rice assistance. The five kilos will support our food needs for a week.” thephilippineherald.com

Such steady support is especially vital within Siargao’s more remote barangays. Plaza hopes the LGU will continue to prioritize families in these areas through future distributions.

Next Steps

The “Bodega ng Bayan” is anticipated to extend its reach, aiming to aid even more households on Siargao. As the initiative develops, local stakeholders are looking into ways to optimize logistics and possibly incorporate additional staples beyond rice.

Looking ahead: With the program’s popularity and proven effectiveness, LGU officials are exploring opportunities to scale up—whether through integrating fresh produce or expanding to more barangays. The goal: ensure sustained, reliable access to basic food sustenance across Siargao.
