Remembering Rear Admiral Guy Richmond Griffiths, AO, DSO, DSC, RAN
We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Rear Admiral Guy Richmond Griffiths, AO, DSO, DSC, RAN, a distinguished veteran of the Battle of Surigao Strait. Rear Admiral Griffiths, who reached the remarkable age of 101, served his country with honor and distinction throughout his career.
His passing comes shortly after another veteran, Able Seaman David Mattiske, also left us. Both men served their country admirably, leaving a lasting impact on those they served alongside and the communities they touched.
In 2019, Rear Admiral Griffiths and Able Seaman Mattiske visited Surigao City, where they participated in the 75th-anniversary activities commemorating the Battle of Surigao Strait. With the support of the Australian Embassy, they brought four Royal Australian Navy ships to Surigao Strait, further cementing their commitment to honoring the history and sacrifices of those who fought in this historic battle.
Rear Admiral Griffiths' service extended beyond the Battle of Surigao Strait. He participated in significant historical events, including serving on the HMS Repulse, and in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. In recognition of his exceptional service and contributions to military history, Rear Admiral Griffiths was made a Fellow of the War History Institute.
As we mourn the loss of these two remarkable individuals, we also salute their courage, dedication, and selfless service to their country. Their legacies will forever be remembered and honored by those who knew them and by future generations who will learn of their sacrifices.
